A few hours ago i was playing in a tournament, Blinds were 600/1200 w/ 125 ante about 30 players left from 350. I had taken a hit and was down to 26k. I get dealt JJ in middle position. One player in front raises to 4k i think about raising, but he's been playing very conservative and I don't want to commit to this hand just yet, so I decide I'll call and if the flop comes out shitty i'll push over his C-bet. Well, it didn't work out like that.
the button moves all in, he's been using his stack quite a bit and knows what he can get away with. he is the biggest stack at the table, about 120k (the next highest stack was about 60k on the cutoff) also the origional bettor has less than 30k so no one involved could put a huge dent in him. then to my surprise the tight ass, short stack small blind insta-calls all in for 10k, he was getting great odds but I think he had some cards to go with it. Then the origional raiser insta-folds. Right then I started thinking too much and I know this is no longer a coin flip. I'm either way ahead or dead to 2 cards, what kind of hand would a conservative player bet 4xBB from early position then dump at the first sign of trouble, I was thinking KQ or AQ. I put the small blind on at least AK.
Even if I'm wrong and the small blind has the main pot locked up with AA i would have still doubled up from the side pot. If i fold I have a little less than 20BB and maybe I'll make it to the next pay jump if the cards run dry for me. the only question was wheather the big stack had a pair bigger than jacks with this much paint spoken for.
If my jacks hold up, or a hit a miracle two outer I would be in a great position for the final table. but if I fold with less than 20BB I gotta get real lucky to win. So I call, the big stack shows QQ and the small blind shows KK, no surprise that the board ran out 9 high with all the high cards in the hands.
