having read and commented on others' blogs kinda makes me wanna start my own. so here it is.
oh, btw, it's kinda nice to have a "secret" blog that no one really knows because pretty much everyone around me don't know/care about poker.
so i am a 20 yr old university student studying comp sci and psychology. i'm currently in my 3rd yr now and i will (hopefully) graduate in 2 yrs (before 2012). i failed my 2nd yr because i wasn't disciplined with schedule and when i realized it was too late to catch up. i've played poker seriously (i played play money for a yr, which is basically a waste of time!) for about a yr now. i started with .1/.25 nl ring game on stars, lost my deposit of 200 because as a beginner i was loose passive, a hopeless chaser and tiltting donk. then i went to fulltilt, deposited 55 and ran that up to around 300 playing the same ring game. then i was down to about 80 after one night of crazy drunk/tired play. so i went to sleep at 4ish on the floor (i was over at a friends' house for poker and lost that too lol). i woke up at 8:30ish, grabbed a coffee and started again, playing 2 tables of .1/.25 nl. i flopped sets when others had pocket AA and top pair top kickers. i flopped straights when 1 player had KK and the other 2 pair. in short, i ran uber uber hot that day and had over 280 on one table at one point. i did not eat/drink until 3 in the afternoon. then i discovered plo. my first experience was, "omfg! this is amazing!" because i won a $70 3 way pot at .1/.25 with middle set. i was instantly hooked, i did some studying, read jeff hwang's book and started playing. for anyone who has a tilting problem, plo is not the best game of choice! my record: losing $150 at .1/.25 6 max on fulltilt in less than 30 mins. yea! that's right! so again, i went busto. then i deposited another $200 and vowed to stick to nl. it worked out. i ran that $200 to $500 because i was able to hit my str8s and flushes when ppl have sets and 2 pairs. looking back, i played like a total loose passive fish. i dont know why. but as i was steadily losing that $500, i switched to the $11+1 turbo sng on fulltilt about 2 months ago. then i ran my 300ish bankroll to 1500 in less than 6 weeks.my stats are pretty impressive (at least i think lol) as sharkscope shows:
game played: 877
avg stake: $11
avg roi: 18% (the book says u should be able to maintain 15%ish)
avg profit: $1742
ability: 73/100
so i'm pretty happy with how i was able to cope with the huge insane swings of these turbo sngs (at one pt, i ran my br to 1500 then for the next 2 weeks, lost 500 over 200 games then i recovered and went back to 1500).
i felt like im getting the hang of turbo sngs now, esp. at that low level. im not afraid to play against even some of the best/most profitable plyrs like "brainmuscle" on fulltilt. look at his stats if u dont know who he is on sharkscope...pretty amazing dude with ability 77/100.
in the meantime, my tilting problem has gone so much better and i prolly consider it my biggest accomplishment in poker. i read and am still reading the poker mindset. its such a great book that talks about our ego problems, and emotions and tilt problems. wonderful read! and it allows me to concentrate on what's important in a hand. i plan to read tommy angelo's elements of poker next. i love tommy's little one liners, they're so wise and funny!
anyways, after almost 900 sngs, im getting tired of it. it feels like such a grind and not so much poker playing. so i switched back to 6 max .1/.25 nl. i play on 2 tables at a time cos that allows me to concentrate on finding other players' weakness, and taking notes to help me exploit them later. as for my poker playing ability, a lot of the "technical" poker books didn't help that much, maybe because i was a hopeless weak passive chaser back then and i should prolly read them again. but also, i find them way too theoretical! that's y i like cardrunners' videos and also phil galfond's videos on bluefire and his various articles. i think i benefitted so much from reading galfond's articles on actual hand analysis and watching the videos. i did not subscribe but i prolly will to bluefire just to watch galfond's vids. he's just the best teacher. if u guys havent got a chance to c them, just youtube search "phil galfond bluefire sample."
as of now, i'm studying for my finals...i might fail a couple courses but im gonna try my best not to. i will commit myself to studying for the next 11 days until the 14th. then i'll put in some serious hrs in playing poker, reading about it, and some massive hand analysis sessions (i've saved a lot of the interesting hands that i played, both in cash games and sngs).
so yea, back to studying comp sci now! hope everyone in school is doing well!
