Carlos Mortensen took down the WPT Hollywood Poker Open and by doing so, he became the most successful player in the World Poker Tour history.
Mortensen scored his third WPT title, joining Gus Hansen as the player with most WPT wins, and with the $393,820 first prize money he surpassed Daniel Negreanu on top of the all-time money list in WPT events. Mortensen has cashed approximately $5.75 million at the WPT.
At Hollywood Poker Open it was an open battle for the win, but in the end Mortensen defeated Mike Mustafa heads up. In the decisive hand Mustafa ran into a setup that cost him nearly all his chips. The players saw a flop of Td 9d 6s in a limped pot. Mortensen checked, Mustafa bet, Mortensen check-raised, Mustafa pushed all-in and Mortensen quickly called. Mustafa had top two with T9 but Mortensen had flopped a straight with 87 and the turn and river blanked. Mustafa managed to double up a couple of times with the few chips he had left, but finally he lost with 66 vs KT and the game was settled.
Carlos Mortensen, 37, was born in Ecuador to a Danish father and Spanish mother. At 15 he moved to Spain, the country that he still represents. Later on life took him to Las Vegas where he became a poker pro. He has found plenty of success in his chosen profession: apart from those WPT titles he has two WSOP bracelets, one of them from the Main Event 2001, and he is still the only player who has won both the Main Event and the WPT Championship. His total tournament cashes amass to a whopping $9.6 million, taking him to 12th place in the all-time money list.
