The Coinflip Challenge has created lots of discussion, with many observers saying the terms of the challenge are impossible because a chess grandmaster is thrown in the mix. On one of his recent blog entries on Coinflip, Sune Berg Hansen addresses the question himself and calls himself "a stumbling block or dead in the water" in the Challenge.
The first stumbling blocks in the Challenge are formidable enough: PLO against the mighty Ziigmund and Backgammon against the former World Champion Peter Hallberg. And then comes the really hard part...
"(The challenger) will also have to play a chess blitz match against me and win. That will prove either rather easy or completely impossible! All depending on who the challenger is," Sune writes on his blog entry.
It's obvious that because of the practically non-existent luck factor in chess the better player will nearly always win unless something really strange happens. Matches hang in the balance only between equally strong players. Even Sune himself probably wouldn't have +ev in the challenge if he was somehow cloned and could play chess against himself: "I would have roughly 5 percent if I think my chances against the two guys are around 30 percent for each (I think they are bigger – but let's be polite). That would give me something like 0.3 * 0.3 * 0.5 = 0.045 equity. (and hence a bad bet)," he writes.
However, there are players who are better than Sune in chess and also very competent in the other games, one notable example being the Russian Grandmaster Alexander Grischuk. "I estimate he has around 13-16 percent equity," Sune writes and continues, "I know some of the good grandmasters are very interested (with TV coming they can probably easily get a sponsor) so I am sure someone will take the bet and have good odds."
"There have been some complaints that the odds are rather bad but this is obviously not a challenge for everyone – only being good at poker, backgammon or chess is not enough to be 'The Ultimate Gameplayer' – you have to have all-round skills to compete :)," Sune concludes.
