On New Year's Day at the Star City Casino in Sydney, Australia, a drunken poker player pulled off a successful bluff in an unusual way, by fooling the casino staff who never realised how drunk he really was. The casino was slapped with a fine for serving an intoxicated patron and allowing him to gamble.

The man sat at the poker table for 17 hours straight, until 7am when the Star City closed, and managed to order and down a very respectable 42 beers in that time, averaging two and a half cold ones every hour. The casino were fined for breaching the regulations but in their letter to the local gaming authority they explained that they, frankly, got bluffed.

"The nature of poker is that players tend to be -- very controlled in their facial expressions and body movements. -- This level of control means that many of the visible signs that a person -- is affected by alcohol may be minimized," the letter states.

The original fine of AUD 10,000 was since cut because of Star City's good track record. The not-so-funny part of the story is that some of their employees were sacked or demoted because of the incident.
