You all know I am a big fan of Tom 'durrrr' Dwan, however that is not the reason for writing this piece on his overall 2009 performance, I am only writing because he is, indeed, awesome.
At the beginning of this year Dwan faced a serious slump being down $3 million in online cash games. Then he had a short winning streak just to find himself $4 million down in May 2009. Most durrrr-haters were already foreseeing the end of this rising poker star but then he came to prove us wrong, once more.
Well, first all the HSP episodes aired and he had a great performance there. This was followed by some intense durrrr Challenge action against Patrik Antonius during the WSOP. But on June 30th Tom Dwan sat down at the online high stakes tables again and turned the numbers around.
Tom Dwan played against two of the top players in the world, Phil Ivey and Ilari 'Ziigmund' Sahamies (who will hopefully tell us all about it in his next blog entry). The games were $500/$1000 PLO against Ziigmund and $500/$1000 HA (Half Omaha, Half Hold'em) against Ivey.
Action was intense and insane (just the amounts wagered on the top five pots of the session add up to $2 million) and Dwan came out of the PLO session up $700,000. Ivey did better than Ziigmund, only losing $90k to Dwan.
Adding this to Dwan's numbers he is now profitting $1.5 million for 2009. It takes a very skilled poker player to be back up at this point.
