Casino City Times have compiled their reporters' list of Top 10 memorable moments in this years WSOP Main Event. Here are some excerpts.
Jack Ury's remarkable run
97-year old Ury is the oldest participant ever in the Main Event, and the oldest to make it to Day 3. Unfortunately Ury was a no-show on Day 3 and his 8,100 stack was gobbled up by the blinds.
Billy Kopp's elimination
Last year Kopp busted in 12th place when he had the second biggest stack and could have cruised to the final table, but instead made a very questionable shove and lost to chip leader Darvin Moon who was holding a bigger flush. This time Kopp made another deep run but again lost in a memorable way: his chips went in on the turn when the board read 884 A and he was holding AA but to his horror Nicolas Babel turned over 88. "That's just so sick," said Annie Duke who came over to watch the hand from a nearby table.
Joe Cheong takes a bad beat
On Day 8, Cheong and Filippo Candio got their chips in on a flop of 665 with Cheong holding aces and Candio just 75. If Cheong had won the hand (as an 87% favorite) he would have had twice as many chips as the rest of the field. Instead Candio hit a runner-runner straight and Cheong fell to an average stack. Both players made it to the final table.
Gary Kostiuk's run
Kostiuk is a 49-year old optometrist from Canada who turned a $350 satellite win to 85th place and a $79,806 cash at the Main Event. He is also suffering from multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheel chair. His son Ryan was there to help out his father during a very special run.
Matt Affleck's bad beat
Affleck had to suffer what must be every poker player's ultimate nightmare. After busting in 80th place last year, he got Jim Duhamel's chips in the middle in a 40 million chips pot when there were 15 players remaining. Affleck had AA, Duhamel JJ on a board of QT9x. "I was (thinking to myself), 'I'm going to be chip leader at the final table. I'm going to have 40 million chips and I'm going to win this tournament,'" Affleck said. Instead, an 8 fell on the river and Affleck was understandably devastated (pictured). Even Duhamel said later that the hand made him tilt a little bit because he was so angry with himself for making a bad play. After recovering from the initial shock, Affleck was able to shake hands and leave the stage with dignity.
