The Mohegan nation in Connecticut have their first female leader since the 18th century when Lynn Malerba, 56, was introduced as the new chief. The Mohegans run one of the largest hotel-casinos in the world.


As part of the ritual of becoming the leader Malerba was also given a new Mohegan name, Mutawi Mutahash, or "Many Hearts".

During the reign of the previous chief, Ralph Sturges, the Mohegans opened the Mohegan Sun casino and hotel complex in Uncasville, Connecticut in 1996. It's the second largest casino in the USA. The hotel-casino has approximately 10,000 employees, about six times as much as there are members in the tribe who run the establishment.
