CardPlayer Magazine caught up with Phil Ivey after the final table of the WSOP Main Event was set in July. In the interview, he speaks about what the Main Event means to him and what are his plans for the four months hiatus before play continues.
A player of Ivey's calibre can only be satisfied with a win, however he says that making the November Nine is a pretty big accomplishment in itself.
When asked if the wait before November is a drawback or advantage to him, Ivey said, "I would say it’s a drawback, because I’m kind of in a groove with playing with all of these guys. When they come back in November, they might play a little differently. I know everything to do, but I will have to go back and replay hands in my mind come November. I think it’s a drawback … I would love to just finish this thing."
Of the other November Niners, Ivey mentions the shortest stack James Akenhead who impressed him with his play.
Ivey is by far the most well known and feared player in the final table. When asked how he uses that aura to his advantage, Ivey explains, "Well, you just have to try to figure out what each player is thinking. How they play certain hands, what they’re thinking about in the middle of hands. What their feelings are toward me as a player, and what they think they can get away with and what they can’t. And then you just try to take advantage of situations when they come up."
Those were just a couple of questions put to Ivey, read the whole story at Cardplayer.com here.
