Phil Ivey's incredible mistake at the WSOP Main Event, when there were about 3 tables left and he mucks a winning hand in a $2 million pot has been the number 1 subject on the poker forums this week. On his audio blog on Poker Road, Barry Greenstein says he phoned Ivey after the ESPN broadcast to ask him what the heck happened.

When you look at the hand (watch here or read the recap below), it looks like Ivey realises his mistake right away and is disgusted with himself but that was not the case. According to Greenstein, Ivey had no idea that he had mucked a flush and the first thing he asked over the phone was, "Is there a chance they could have doctored the hand?" meaning that ESPN might have made a mistake in editing and shown the table cards from some other hand.

Ivey's reaction after the hand is caused by seeing Jordan Smith's hand, when he realises that Smith has 3-bet him preflop out of position with A9 off suit.

"This hand is never gonna leave me," Ivey had said to Greenstein. However, Barry says the mistake in itself is nothing special; "It can happen to anyone," says Barry - even to the best player in the world. Even so, Ivey will probably be teased about it for a long time.

You can listen to Barry's blog on Poker Road here.

If you don't want to watch the video, here's a recap of the hand: Ivey raises in early position with 8s 8d, Jordan Smith 3-bets from the big blind with Ad 9c, Ivey calls. The players check to the river with the board reading Qh Ts 5s Qs As. After the final round of checks, Smith announces "Ace" and Ivey waits until he has seen his opponent's cards - and then mucks his hand, not realising he has made a flush on the river.
