In another example of the complex legal situation regarding gambling in Europe, the Norwegian Football (soccer) Federation forced the Spanish club Valencia CF to drop the sponsor's logo from their shirts in the recent UEFA Europa League match against the Norwegian side Stabäk.
Valencia is sponsored by Unibet, one of the largest gambling operators in Europe. However, Norway like many other European countries has a gambling monopoly, and only the state owned Norsk Tipping is allowed to promote its' games.
Valencia are furious with the decision, since earlier in the summer the Polish side Lech Poznan were allowed to play in Norway promoting another European gambling operator. European Football Federation UEFA took the side of the Norwegian federation and threatened to kick out Valencia from the competition if they failed to comply.
Spokesperson for Valencia, Juan Pablo Molinero said they intend to ask other clubs to join them in boycotting Norwegian teams unless the situation changes. Other clubs sponsored by gambling operators include the European giants Real Madrid and AC Milan.
