At the beginning of 2009, famous online poker player Tom, aka 'durrrr', Dwan laid down a challenge for all poker players in the world. Patrik Antonius, Phil Ivey and David Benyamine are the official candidates who have agreed to battle durrrr heads up.
Tom Dwan explained the challenge, “I’m making this heads-up challenge to the world. Anyone can accept. Four tables, minimum of $200/$400, and I’ll put up $1.5 million to their $500,000. We play 50,000 hands minimum and if they end up a dollar after rake they keep the side money or whatever. So basically, if you and I played and you won a dollar, you would get my $1.5 million and if I won a dollar I would win your $500,000. So I’m giving a million dollars free if anyone thinks they can do it.”
The challenge has been hugely discussed in forums and many believe that durrrr is being quite arrogant laying 3:1 odds, however others (including Ivey himself!) say that durrrr's expertise in multi-tabling makes him a favorite. Jason Kirk from Poker Listings talked to Ryan Daut, 2007 PCA winner, about who he thinks has the edge in this bet. Daut thinks that this can be answered by measuring each player's winning rate but that this is very hard to determine.
"I was talking with Isaac Haxton and Scott Seiver and we couldn't come up with any reasonable numbers. Scott was saying that the win rate could be anywhere from -8 to +8, and it's just impossible to tell," said Daut.
But overall, Daut told Poker Listings that he believes durrrr has the best chances of making money, "Tom is putting up $1.5 million against $500,000 from the other player, so on the surface you would say Tom needs to win 75% to be profitable. But that's not true - they're keeping the money that they're playing for," Daut pointed out. "If on average he wins $1.5 million [of his opponent's money] when he wins, that's going to make up for the side bets when he loses it. In actuality the money at stake is much more than the side bet. So if Tom wins 60-65% of the time he's going to end up ahead overall."
The first contender will be Patrik Antonius and they will begin playing at the high stakes tables at Full Tilt when the Aussie Millions are finished. If durrrr wins the three bets he would take $1.5 million profit from the side bets plus the cash game winnings over 50,000 hands, which could be substantially more. It's probably going to take some weeks to play 50,000 hands so everyone who is interested will have a chance to watch the titans duel at Full Tilt Poker.
