Walking through the halls of this year’s WSOP, one of the biggest attractions were the girls handing out cards for Rio’s Sapphire topless pool. In a trend that has become popular in Vegas, this was the hotel’s version of “topless beach party”, and the great appeal was that it was the day time hang out for the Sapphire Gentlemen’s Club dancers. This Tuesday however, in a routine enforcement check done by Las Vegas Metro Police Department, 11 arrests were made, forcing the Rio to shut down all operations at the pool. 8 women were charged with soliciting prostitution and various charges of possession of controlled substances. Another 2 people were charged with sale of cocaine and conspiracy to violate the Uniform Controlled Substance Act.

Las Vegas Metro Police has been known to routinely operate these types of checks at nightclubs, casinos, hotels and pools. Contrary to popular belief, prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas (and in Clark County which contains its metropolitan area). Although Nevada has a rich history of legal brothels, none operate within the limits of Clark County.

The Rio said in a statement Tuesday night that the “pool complex remains open to guests; however, the property decided to suspend a topless sunbathing option at the resort.”
