Several US banks have already started sending out letters to inform their clients that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act will go into full effect in December as they will begin to enforce all of the penalties cited by the law.
Nevada State Bank and California Bank and Trust, sent out letters to their customers this week specifically referring to the UIGEA. Both banks are part of Zions Bancorporation, who oversees several banks in Nevada, California, Arizona, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado and Utah. Nevada State Bank sent the following letter to their customers: "In compliance with the U.S. Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, we are required to notify you that you are prohibited from processing transactions derived from Internet bets or wagers where such bet or wager is unlawful under any applicable Federal or State law."
While this does not really prove a clear enforcement of the law, it does strike fear into the heart of American poker players, as the law could potentially make things more difficult for depositing and withdrawing money from online poker sites. It doesn’t however make online poker illegal, which a normal misconception among poker players in the US.
