Recent declarations by PokerStars state that the US only represents a small part of their global poker market. These declarations came as a response to what a spokes person for PokerStars called “inaccuracies” made by PokerScout.com regarding the ongoing battle between them and Full Tilt Poker for the biggest online poker tournament ever hosted.
The memo released to the media yesterday states, “In recent weeks, various commentaries have provided inaccurate estimates about the market share of PokerStars United States customers. The figures state that the PokerStars U.S. market share is significantly higher than the actual amount and we wish to correct these estimates.” Furthermore, “While PokerStars continues to serve customers in the United States - based on the legal advice we have received - when it comes to our numbers in terms of both player liquidity and revenue, the U.S. market represents substantially less than 50% of our business.”
This statement has lead to many speculations over whether or not Stars is preparing to exit the United States, or simply trying to hedge the attention drawn by this type of hype, that would clearly catch the attention of the government. Regardless of what their motives may be, Poker Stars continues its onslaught on the US market by jumping on the TV band wagon when it airs their version of Poker TV on October 11th. Poker Stars Million Dollar Challenge is produced by Fox Entertainment and will have a similar theme to “Face the Ace”, where one lucky amateur poker player will qualify through online freerolls to finally make it to the show to play against Daniel Negraneu for $1 million.
