Vanessa Selbst last night accomplished the unthinkable as she secured herself the NAPT Mohegan Sun main event title for the second year in a row. Selbst will take home $450,000 for the impressive win.
Team PokerStars pro Vanessa Selbst last night accomplished what many can only dream of as she for the second year in a row was crowned champion of the North American Poker Tour's Mohegan Sun main event.
Selbst made her breakthrough as a up-and-coming poker star last year when she won the 2010 NAPT Mohegan Sun for $750,000 and soon after went on to claim her second major title of the year as she scooped the Partouche Poker Tour's main event in Cannes for an additional $1,6 million.
Now, a bit more than a year after her first NAPT title she has incredibly repeated her triumph, making her the only player in the history of the tour to claim back-to-back titles.
Selbst entered the event in Connecticut alongside 386 other runners, and would soon establish herself on top of the chip counts as the levels passed by.
Reaching the final table with the second largest stack, she would continue to demonstrate why she is perhaps the most talked-about poker pro of the day, as she fought her way to the decisive heads-up finale against 2010 Aussie Millions winner Dan Shak.
At this point, Selbst was sitting on the shortest stack of the two, but after yo-yoing for around two hours, she finally got the better of Shak as she flopped two pair holding Kc 7c on a Ks 7d 3s board.
Shak held Jh 7h for second pair, and soon the chips went to the middle in what would turn out to be the final hand of the tournament. The turn brought no help in the 5h, and when another blank hit the river with the 2h, Selbst could celebrate the remarkable win.
"This is seriously the most special thing in my career," Selbst said following her triumph, according to the PokerStars Blog.
"Maybe last year wasn't a fluke."
Besides being handed over the NAPT Mohegan Sun trophy for the second time in her career, Selbst also collected $450,000 for her first place finish, bringing her lifetime total above $4 million.
Dan Shak earned $254,000 for his runner-up finish, while Tyler Kenney took care of third and $120,000.
