ESPN coverage of the WSOP Europe Main Event last September started running last Sunday. Among the various poker treats was a priceless exchange between Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth concerning the usual "grand entry" made by Hellmuth. As you may remember, this time it involved slave girls, centaurions and Hellmuth dressed as Caesar complete with bronze chestplate and a laurel wreath, just like at the WSOP in Las Vegas a couple of months earlier. Some people may have found it funny, but Doyle wasn't impressed.
The conversation ensued when Brunson had something he wanted to ask Hellmuth about his entrance.
Brunson: Tell me the truth, are you embarrassed at all?
Hellmuth: Not at all.
Brunson: Not at all? I'm embarrassed for you.
Hellmuth: Doyle, I thought you of all people would be proud of it, knowing that it's putting money in your pocket.
Brunson: Making a circus out of a poker game?
Hellmuth: Are you kidding me? I add a little drama, a little theatre to the game.
Brunson: If people want to go to the theatre, they go to the theatre.
Hellmuth: I'll ask you one quick question. Do you think it's bad for poker when I show up like that?
Brunson: Yes.
Hellmuth: Really?
Brunson: Yes.
The first broadcast also contained an interesting hand between Viktor Blom, the man many believe to be Isildur1, and Ian Munns:
Blom raises to 3k MP with Kd 2d, Munns re-raises to 9k, call.
Flop AA3 with two clubs, Blom checks, Munns bets 9k, Blom check-raises to 58k, Munns 3-bets to 116k.
At this point the faint-hearted might have backed down with just K high, but Blom thought he saw an opportunity and pushed all-in for 236k total. Munns made the call with A7 and Blom left the table in a hurry.
