Annette Obrestad was born in Sandne, Norway. The seeds of her poker career were sown when her father taught her to play 5-card and 7-card poker. As she grew up she did not consider poker could be a career for her and she was mostly interested in bowling. One day, while she watched a bowling match, she saw a multipoker.com banner and decided to open an account and play 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo with play money chips.
Annette says that she has never made a deposit in any online poker room. Once she started playing poker for real money her mother would not let her use her credit card and she did not have one of her own so she played some freerolls and won $9. Her bankroll began growing and since then and from September 2006 to February 2007 she made more than $500,000 on PokerStars, $200,000 on Ultimate Bet and $136,000 on Full Tilt Poker.
Despite her young age Annette is considered one of the most talented poker players in the circuit, she is included in the same lists as Annie Duke, Paul Wasicka and Jennifer Harman. Her biggest winning to date was the 2007 inaugural WSOPE where she caused a sensation by pocketing $2,000,000 and becoming the youngest World Series bracelet winner.
For now, Annette only participates in tournaments throughout Europe, she will be 21 in 2010 and then she will be of legal age to play in the US. Annette is very young and talented and many young players look up to her.
In 2010 Annette had a good run in Aussie Millions. She won the $1,000 PLO side event for $40,000 and finished 7th in the main event, cashing out $175,000.
Public Perception and Reputation
Annette has a very genuine personality with a competitive edge to it. She has always disliked losing. Annette has pointed out that for her playing poker is no longer about the money, now it is for prestige and that she will do so for as long as she can. The online poker forums seem to have a kind of love-hate relationship with her, many young players think very highly of her while others seem to search for any pretense to put her down. This may be because of her sometimes stinging remarks on her opponents' skills (or rather lack of it), or simply because of jealousy or prejudice as she is a young girl stepping into a world dominated by male egos which in itself is bound to cause controversy. Either way, Annette has come to the poker world for good!
